courses

These are the courses currently taught by Professor Patalano. Beyond these courses, many others in the department are broadly related to the work that goes in in the lab (e.g., Human Memory, Social Psychology, Quantitative Research Methods).

Cognitive Psychology (PSYC 220)

This course provides a foundation in the area of psychology known as cognitive psychology, the study of human mental processes. Usually taught once per year, this course has an enrollment limit of 40 students. When Professor Patalano is teaching the course, those not admitted during preregistration should make an enrollment request (the professor does not keep a separate waitlist so there is no need to write directly to her). If seats become available, preference will be given to senior and junior Psychology and NSB majors. Note that there are typically as many as 50 individuals on the waitlist; the number of enrolled students who drop the class before the first dsy of class has ranged from 0-20.

Psychology of Decision Making (PSYC 322)

This course provides a foundation in the area of cognitive psychology associated with human judgment and decision making processes. Usually taught once per year, this course has an enrollment limit of 18 students. When Professor Patalano is teaching the course, it is by permission of instructor because it is an advanced seminar. See the course description in the course catalog for desirable prerequisites. Interested students should submit a request for permission and send a note to the professor indicating their qualifications/reasons for wishing to take the course. Permission will be given before the last day of preregistration. If seats remain, permission will continue for qualified students on a rolling basis. This course does not historically have a long waitlist.

Research Seminar in Reasoning (PSYC 382)

This course provides an opportunity for a small group of students to participate in an original research project in this laboratory on the topics described in this lab website (download some of the publications on this site to get an idea of the kinds of studies we might do). With an enrollment limit of no more than 10 students, the course is by permission of instructor. See the course description in the course catalog for desirable prerequisites. Interested student should submit a request for permission and visit the professor during her office hours to discuss the course. Permission will be given before the last day of preregistration. If seats remain, permission will continue for qualified students on a rolling basis. This course does not historically have a long waitlist.

Statistics: An Activity-Based Approach (PSYC 200)

This course provides a foundation in the use of statistics in the field of psychology. There are many sections fo this course taught by different faculty. When Professor Patalano is teaching the section, it has a fixed limit of 20 students due to classroom size, computer availability, and grading workload. Those not admitted during preregistration should make an enrollment request (the professor does not keep a separate waitlist so there is no need to write directly to her). If seats become available, preference will be given to senior and junior Psychology and NSB majors. Note that there are typically as many as 50 individuals on the waitlist and rarely does more than 1 enrolled student drop the course. There are many other courses in a variety of departments that can be used to fulfill the statistics requirement for the Psychology major; please see the Psychology Department website for a list of these courses (in the Guide to Majors).
